Interior Architecture and Environmental Design

The undergraduate program in Interior Architecture and Environmental Design aims to train interior architects who are sensitive to the scientific and professional developments in this field, can understand and interpret researches and applications realized on national and international platforms, and can do studies in these fields. The sub-goals thought to be realized in accordance with this purpose are, in brief, to foster the students with knowledge and skills required for professional practice and related research practices; to teach them the methods and approaches of analysis and evaluation and how to gather data; to introduce them to modern architectural instruments to be used in their researches.

Interior Architecture and Environmental Design which is in fact an integral component of architectural education creates the scope of forming, sizing, equipping, and identifying spaces according to their functions in the process of the design of new structures. Besides, renovating old buildings to meet current needs is among Interior Architecture services. The design of these buildings in terms of physical environment control (heating, ventilation, lighting, etc.) as well as functional and aesthetical terms is also one of the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design services. To sum up, Interior Architecture designs (deploys, forms, sizes, determines colors and materials) the elements composing spaces (floor, wall, ceiling, integrity, spacing, etc.) within these principles.

The members of this profession trained in the subjects mentioned above and equipped with knowledge and skills make a great contribution to and provide advantages for increasing the quality generally of our physical environment, specifically of the places we live in and use.  It is not possible to create modern spaces that are healthy, useful and can meet our psychological needs without all this information.

The spine of the undergraduate program is composed of the design classes that get gradually more complex in a sequential manner beginning in the first semester of the first year and are completed with a diploma project in the eighth semester.  The design mentioned here is the design of interior spaces and their physical environment.  The classes or class groups that continue for one or more semesters and are not as continuous as the classes (studio studies) in the aforementioned design group can be summarized as follows: interior architecture and art history, building and production techniques, construction materials, communication and presentation techniques, human-environment relations, research methods, social and ethical responsibilities, project and construction site management, zoning law and economic principles. As it can be seen in the attachment of weekly schedule, these courses and course groups have been distributed in a sequential manner according to the requirements of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design classes (studio studies) offered each semester.

The courses included in the Interior Architecture and Interior Design undergraduate program can be grouped as compulsory, compulsory/selective, and selective. Nearly 60% of these courses cover theoretical and applied classes that provide students with job skills; 40% cover occupational and general knowledge classes. The classes in the first category are supported by the ones in the second category in order to improve creative thinking, problem-solving, and evaluation skills of the students while increasing their general and occupational knowledge.  Under normal circumstances, this undergraduate program enables the students who complete 143 credits in four years with Interior Architecture and Environmental Design formation.
