English Language Teaching
Although the number and quotas of English Language Teaching programs have been increased, the need for qualified English teachers in our country is still enormous. Foreign language education in public schools starts from the first level of primary school. Furthermore, the importance of speaking a foreign language increases rapidly in our country particularly while on the way to a full membership of European Union.
English, as the most common language in the world, is widely used in order to communicate in international platforms in both social and academic fields, thereby enhancing the significance of the aforementioned needs. In the light of all these facts, the aim of English Language Teaching Undergraduate Program is designed to educate teachers with developed English language teaching skills, qualifications, and, necessary equipment in the field of language education, in order to be a know-how in research and to improve themselves.
Subjects in the first year such as "English Contextual Grammar" and "English Oral and Written Communication Skills" are generally intended for the development of English knowledge and skills. In the second, third and fourth years, subjects of field and profession knowledge such as "Linguistics", "Language Acquisition", "ELT Methodology" and "Testing and Evaluation in Foreign Language Teaching" are emphasized. Moreover, teacher candidates are made to gain one more foreign languages as well as English by means of second compulsory foreign language classes. With the help of optional courses, students are provided with the opportunity of improving themselves in cultural and professional subjects in accordance with their personal interests.
In order to make students gain teaching skills accurately, teaching practice is done in public schools and colleges chosen by the department in addition to theoretical and practical lessons at the university. In the information age in which communication and information technologies are developing rapidly and the access to knowledge has accelerated to a great extent, the main feature of English Language Teaching Department is to educate teachers who know how to access knowledge, have mastered to learn, receive education in student-centered classrooms, experience research based learning, believe in continuous search and self-improvement in their own lives, combine theory and practice during the learning process, know how to make use of technology in foreign language education and apply all these skills in their professional lives.
