Mathematics and Computer Sciences
Mathematics forms the basis of natural and engineering sciences. The application of mathematics is possible only through computational or/and computer sciences. Today mathematics and computer sciences is a rapidly growing multidisciplinary area with connections to various sciences. Use of mathematics with computer sciences increases the artistic value of mathematical sciences rather than decrease. Moreover, it also brings a new insight into the philosophy of mathematics. Espacially, if the scientific and artistic aspects of mathematics are considered as flowers in a garden, its various applications in science and technology can be likened to fruits in that garden. In other words, theory and application are the parts of a whole, which is also the philosophy of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences. The aim of our department is to present mathematics as a whole, to develop undergraduate and graduate students’ knowledge in applied mathematics and computer sciences; in particular, numerical algorithms, software design and visualization.
Besides working as instructors at universities and as researchers in computer sciences or/and mathematical sciences, our graduates can find employment at public or private sectors as bank clerks, actuaries or administrators. Students taking pedagogical formation courses can also work as teachers in private or public schools.
Our educational program is an organic combination of mathematics and computer sciences. It includes courses related to basic principles of applied mathematics and computer sciences. Elective courses allow students to study the fields they are interested in. Successful students are given a chance to do double major or minor at the Departments of Computer Engineering and Software Engineering.
The goal of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences is to educate students according to the mission of İzmir University, endowing them with high qualifications in compliance with international standards.
