Izmir University Library, founded on an area of 330m², started its service with its 60 seating capacity and 2 personnel in the academic year of 2009-2010.
To form an ‘institutional memory’ in terms of service concept, rapidly changing in line with technological developments, and to pass our university data and document storage down to the next generations, open access applications have been activated and Mitos True Open System was bought.
As electronic publishing, Izmir University Library has maintained access to EBSCOhost, IEEE/IEE Electronic Library, Elsevier ScienceDirect, Taylor & Francis, WOS (Art & Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index) through TUBITAK EKUAL, and HukukTürk Database through ANKOS with the aim of providing students and all users with quality education in the academic year of 2010-2011.
The books have been arranged according to Library of Congress classification system, except for Medicine books. Medicine books have been arranged according to National Library of Medicine classification system. All books have been catalogued according to the AACR-II (Anglo American Cataloguing Rules II).
The library’s mission is to fulfil the information needs of users in line with their syllabus and research programme requirements through advancements in science and technology.
The library’s vision is to be a library at the global standards providing modern information services at the maximum quality using information technologies.
The library’s prior aim is:
- to help the students and users get the utmost benefit out of the information service fast and efficiently.
- to enable users have access to the information without any problems.
- to have a leading position in information literacy and information management education.
- to become a library having an impact upon academic and social life.
Terms of Utilization
Membership
- Academic, administrative staff and students of İzmir University are allowed to borrow books from the library as long as they are a member.
- To register, university identity card and and e-mail address is required.
- For the academic staff, in case of not obtaining a university identity card, they are obliged to have written information from their departments.
- Members, dropping out permanently or temporarily for any reason, are obliged to inform library staff.
- Visitors who are not university personnel or students may use the library materials, but they cannot borrow books.
What can you borrow?
- With the exception of reference, dissertations, and periodicals (paperback), all the materials can be borrowed within the frame of stated rules.
- For books which cannot be loaned, there is paid photocopy service.
- Reserved books can be borrowed hourly or daily.
- Readers have to be members to borrow books.
- Members should apply to library with membership cards.

How to access books?
Open shelf system is being applied in the library. In this system, you can directly access the material in the reading hall. With the available computer terminals in the library, all of the material in the collection can be browsed. At first, user browses the material on the computer. Then, by checking material’s place number user finds out if the book is available. Later on user can access the material by oneself or may ask help from the library staff.
The books, exclusive of medical books, are coded and placed in the library with Library of Congress classification system and medical books with National Library of Medicine classification system. Information about the Library of Congress and National Library of Medicine classification systems is hanged on appropriate places in the hall. Additionally, you can apply to the officers for further information. Short term trainings on how to use the library are also organized.
Reserving books
The book may have been borrowed by another user if it’s not on the shelf. If the book is borrowed by another user you should definitely reserve it on computer. The reserved books should be obtained within 3 days. Or else, it can be loaned to someone else.
Extending a borrowing period
If the book is not requested by another user, the time can be extended. Extension can be done twice at most.
Library rules and sanctions
- On the way out of the library, bag and books on hand will be shown to the officer at the control desk if requested.
- Once a book is borrowed from the library, loaning procedures must be done. Otherwise, with the warning of the library security system membership will be terminated or disciplinary punishment will be applied.
- For the borrowed and overdue books the library issues both verbal and written warning. Despite the warnings, if the books are not returned yet departments are informed about the situation.
- Daily overdue interest fine determined by the library is drawn for the books not returned on time.
- In the case of overdue of 20 books in one semester, user will not be able to borrow books within that semester.
- Fine limit for one semester is 50 YTL. If the limit is exceeded, no transaction will be done except returning books.
- In the case of loss or damage of any library material, the user will be obliged to replace it. If not the user will be obliged to pay its replacement value.
- Those who damage periodicals by cutting or tearing up, or losing them will be obliged to pay 100% transaction fee added to the current price of each volume.
- In case of loss of books in the reserved unit (short-term borrowing unit), 100% transaction fee added to the current price of the books will be charged.
- In case of failing to maintain books and loaned material, the user will be obliged to pay its value in Turkish Liras at the Central Bank rate of exchange prevailing on the day of payment, plus 50%, together with the amount owing for late returns as of the date on which the item is reported as lost.
- For the loss of books in foreign languages whose price is not possibly stated, the user is obliged to pay $80, and for books in Turkish $40 equivalent value in Turkish Liras at the Central Bank rate.
- Library users can convey all their requests both verbally and written to the library personnel.
